Development of a Computational Fluid Dynamics code for the coupled solution of solid-fluid motion during blade rotation in two-phase flow

Simtec developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code for the simulation of the coupled solid-fluid motion for the rotating blades of a paddlewheel flow meter. The blade rotation velocity is determined by the flow properties of the fluid and the mechanical behavior of the moving parts, e.g. inertia and friction. Thus, the studied cases consisted of the blade rotation being controlled by the flow and included single-phase and two-phase flows, as well as the shape of the wings. The simulation results were validated via comparison with experimental data provided the Chemistry Department, of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The scope for the research project was the optimization of mixing processes in industry.
